Soundtrack

When I get into a real cleaning mood I will often crank the Full Monty soundtrack. When I am feeling upbeat I will listen to my favourite Canadian group Great Big Sea (my blog name comes from one of their songs...) or Bollywood tunes. When I am upset the Beatles "Let it Be" gets put on loop. And when I'm feeling tired and overwhelmed I listen to a classical mix with Pachelbel and Vivaldi and others, a CD I bought in London at a magical concert in a candlelit church in London. if the music doesn't calm me then closing my eyes and taking a deep breath as I remember the concert never fails to bring a smile to my lips.

Unfortunately between overtime (and a horrendous project that just keeps growing) at work, preparing for a Girl Scout event this weekend (baking four different types of Indian sweets times fifty people... Seriously, how do I get myself into stuff like this?!), and generally feeling under the weather, I've been listening to a lot of Pachelbel and co recently.

Do you have certain songs you listen to to recharge or unwind? Or block out the guttural snores of the salaryman asleep on your shoulder on the packed train home?

  1. When the kids were little it was "She Drives Me Crazy" by the Fine Young Cannibals - very loud with lyric changed to "you drive me..." The kids got it and usually left me alone.

  2. My latest discovery is Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. He's the musical equivalent of Prozac! If you haven't listened to his music yet, start here and here. If you like Pachelbel, you should like Pärt.

When I'm particularly mellow, I listen to Ali Farka Touré from Mali. Try this and this. It's an album he did with Ry Cooder.

Let me know if you like it! ^^

    1. Oooooh! I will have to spend more time investigating those links, but so far so good! (although, I must admit that I love stringed instruments - especially the cello, and attending a talk at Harvard between Yoyo Ma and a well-known comedian was an amazing experience - I'm not particularly fond of pianos).

      Thanks!!

  3. Second the Arvo Part (can't put the dots). I like a bit of Vaughn Williams when I want to chill..
