I knitted both of these back in early 2011, but they've been sitting in a box ever since as I didn't know who to give them to. But they have both finally found homes!
Both are cowls, and both were made with a single ball of yarn. The darker, a lightweight lacy cowl in a traditional feather and fan pattern, will be decorating the neck of a amazing woman I met my last visit to Vancouver - kind and gentle, beautiful, and amazingly awe-inspiringly strong.
The lighter cowl is smaller and simpler - a basic cable pattern. I gave it to the lady who runs the towel store near work. I was introduced to her a year or so ago by a coworker, and every day when I walk to or from work we exchange greetings and random comments on the weather / her friend's daughter who has moved to Canada / seasonal happenings / etc. This summer she gave me a bright pink towel as a midsummer gift, then last week she gave me a new year's towel with a snake design and ever since I had been trying to figure out how to repay her kindnesses...
You are such a fantastic knitter. I'm sure the new owners will be very grateful!
ReplyDeleteI'm not particularly adventurous as a knitter (mostly scarves), but the towel lady was thrilled with her new cowl! Of course, she ended up giving me another towel in response, however, totally defeating the purpose! When will I learn not to get into gift wars with Japanese obachan?!?
DeleteYou're going to laugh at me, but I had to look up cowl! It's like a scarf for your face? (Oy. I'm from Africa. Hot. We wear as little clothes as possible. Except during robberies, when we put on balaclava masks and gloves.)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous gorgeous gorgeous colours!
I think of a cowl as a scarf where the ends have been joined to make a loop and I would normally wear it just like a scarf, but I'm probably wrong and a cowl is more of a hooded thing... But then I don't know what to call these, so I'm calling them cowls!
DeleteThe first one is actually a bit darker in real life, more navy and denim blue, the second is pale blue and grey and almost turquoise, quite pretty.
What great gifts! I'd love to be a knitter, but I drop so many stitches and have never learned how to fix them. I have a colleague who knits the most fabulous coats (she says it's not difficult but I don't believe her) and I always envy her so much.
ReplyDeleteCoats? Wow! I'm in awe! I have a short attention span and get bored easily so I do best with scarves, or baby clothes. I have done a couple of shawls and one afghan (interspersed with baby gear), but nothing adult clothing size... So wow! I'm impressed too!
DeleteThese are fabulous! I love the patterns too. And it's touching to know a little bit of the stories that go into each gift item. The towel lady story is hilarious - I think gift wars are the only wars worth having! hugs, C
ReplyDeleteAnd where do you think I got the yarn?! :D Thank you enabler!
DeleteI walked past the towel store today and she was wearing the cowl! And was grinning from ear to ear. She's happy, and while I am sure more towels are in my future, I paid her back and made her happy, which is worth it!
