Tuesday Then & Now - Ueno Buddha

Here's another photo from the Nagasaki University's Metadatabase of Japanese Old Photographs... FINALLY not Nikko Toshogu!

In Ueno Park there is a plaque about the great Buddha that once stood there, with the Buddha's face mounted in stone.

But it wasn't always just a face. Muzu-chan explains why very well, but this is what it used to look like:

  1. So that's what he looked like!

PS: I love the two guys with their hats in the last photo. Wouldn't it be cool if everybody wore hats like that in summer instead of stupid parasols?

  2. I know! I found these photos and just stared at the Buddha for a while... I guess I was thinking something along the lines of Kamakura... And this guy is different... But I love being able to see what the rest of him looked like!

Ps - those hats might work for you, but I'd have people's hats hitting me in the face, or the shoulder! ;)
