Commuting Angst

Today is Saturday, which means I have the next two days off, and as much as I love my job, I am really excited to have the weekend arrive. Not because I have big exciting plans - I'll have to spend the weekend finishing off a translation contract - but because I won't have to commute.

This week has not been a good one for my commute. I've been half sat on by a gentle giant, half crushed by a not so gentle not so giant, elbowed endlessly, given a face full of scarf tassel, hit on the top of the head with the butt of a smartphone, and had my toes trampled more times than I can count. Nothing particularly out of the ordinary (with the exception of the scarf, for the first time repeated shoving of it out of my face had no result beyond making the high school student lean further back, over the half divider and into me). But, perhaps because of the translation and resulting lack of sleep (or annoyance at my procrastination skills), I've found it all too much - the other night I snapped at U for getting too close to me on the couch... Umm, Sarah? That's okay! Good even! Cuddling on the couch is a good thing, and U isn't a cigarette smelly salaryman with over friendly elbows!

So yeah, I'm happy it is the weekend. U has some work he needs to do too, so we're going to spend Sunday morning at the coffee shop, maybe check out a nearby super-sento hot springs... And maybe, I hope, a little cuddle on the couch! ;)

How are you enjoying your weekend?

  1. How was the coffee? How's the translation progressing? Snap-free cuddle has occurred? :)

I'm hiding at home this entire weekend. I have jet lag! Heh heh. Now I have two excuses: my Africa excuse and my jet lag excuse. :D

    1. Ummmm, well, Sunday hasn't exactly been going to plan! I had completely forgotten that U's birthday gift (a box of meat!) was to be delivered today, and that threw a wrench in the time plan... But we're both working away in the living room and a pot of turkey soup is bubbling on the stove and filling the house with a divine smell! So, all good I suppose!

How is the jet lag going? Are you somewhere near Tokyo time yet?

  2. I have a 20 minute cycle to work, and I often arrive irritable and cranky because people are irritating and cranky-making (OK, not a word, but anyway...). I'm not sure that putting me in an enclosed space with many people with the potential to annoy me might just send me over the edge completely...
Hope the translation works out, and that there is enough time for cuddles on the couch when it's done.

    1. Heh! I can imagine what your ride might be like - my walk from the station to work often annoys the heck out of me as, even though there are nice wide sidewalks, there is no specific side people walk on, so I'm forever having to cross back and forth back and forth dodging obaasan and middle school students.

  3. Commuting can be OK if you can do it quietly and comfortably. Otherwise it's just time taken out of your life.

  4. Exactly! Although, if you have a salaryman with over-eager elbows sitting beside you, your commute can be a pretty uncomfortable ordeal that ensures you're in a bad mood for the rest of the day!
